Tonga is an active participant in the international space governance framework and has engaged with several key treaties relevant to space security. It became a party to the Outer Space Treaty, the Partial Test Ban Treaty, and the Rescue Agreement.
Tonga is also party to the International Telecommunication Constitution and Convention, a Member State of the International Telecommunication Union and a subscribing State to the Hague Code of Conduct Against Ballistic Missile Proliferation.
Nationally, the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) acting through the Department of Communications and the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO), plays a vital role in coordinating Tonga’s participation in international frameworks on climate action including space-based disaster monitoring, and satellite communications governance.
Tonga’s Communications Act of 2015 contributes directly to the country’s space security framework by regulating satellite communications and the management of national orbital resources.
