Xjenza Malta established by means of Legal Notice 112 of 2024, is the Malta Government Agency acting as the national research and development and space funding agency, policy development and implementation body, in the area of research, innovation and space.

Malta’s National Space Strategy 2022 outlines the country’s vision to develop a sustainable and innovation-driven space sector, focusing on international regulatory alignment, investment attraction, and the establishment of a national framework for space governance and activities. Malta is engaged regionally as a Cooperating State within the European Space Agency. The country additionally is party to treaties including the Outer Space Treaty, Liability Convention, Partial Test Ban Treaty, and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. 

As a member State to the EU, Malta adheres to the established space framework by the European Union including key positions including but not limited to the Space Strategy for Europe, the European Union Space Strategy for Security and Defence, and the political commitment not to conduct destructive, direct-ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) missile testing.
