The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is Indonesia's national research body, including for space, and oversees the Indonesian Space Agency (INASA) and the The Aeronautics and Space Research Organization. BRIN was established in 2019, and INASA was formed in 2022. The Aeronautics and Space Research Organization produces research, which is translated into government policies by Deputy Departments within BRIN.
Indonesia recognises and displays a civil-military integration with respect to some of its space activities as indicated through legislation and other documents. Key pieces of legislation include Indonesia's Space Law No.21/2013 and the National Plan on Space Activities year 2016-2040. Other relevant documents include Indonesia's National Defense Policy 2020-2024 and the 2015 Defence White Paper.
The aforementioned Defense Policy calls for increased cooperation and coordination between the military and related ministries and institutions - such as with the national space agency - for the development of space technologies and capabilities. Additionally, the Defense Policy expresses the possibility of establishing a space defence unit/command to facilitate the acquisition of military satellites. Relatedly, the National Plan on Space Activities includes objectives across space technologies and capabilities - and recognises the link between space with defense and security.
International and multilateral space activities includes Indonesia's membership at the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum. Key contemporary positions include Indonesia's pledge not to be the first to place weapons in outer space.
