Botswana launched its first satellite BOTSAT-1 in March 2025. The satellite was developed by the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), whose mission includes entrepreneurial research in science, engineering and technology. The Ministry of Communications, Knowledge and Technology supports the key nationally projects at the BIUST, including the BOTSAT.
Amongst space law treaties, Botswana is a party to the Rescue Agreement and Liability Convention. As a member State of the African Union, Botswana adheres to the established space framework by the African Union including key positions like the African Space Policy and African Space Strategy.
