The Belarusian national space program is responsible for civilian programs, research, and international cooperation. The National Agency for Space Research operates under the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), and the agency is responsible for the NASB Geographic Information Systems enterprise, the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the NASB, and the newly established Belkosmos research and production cluster. Presidential Decree 609 from 2004 charges the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) with conducting a unified state policy, as well as the coordination and regulation of Belarusian national space activities.
Belarus’ National Security Concept sets broad principles for safeguarding sovereignty and identifies risks of military expansion in near-Earth space, while a key space security initiative is its political commitment not to be the first to place weapons in outer space.
